Presentation of the 3rd Degree, ”Heavy Setting Maul,” to the Worshipful Master, Rt. Wor. Brother Mark G.S. Bradbury of “Saint John’s Lodge No.1,” by Worshipful Brother Edward Davis, May 1st, 2009.

“It is my pleasure, during this visit to Clift Lodge NO. 10 of Bell Island, NL, to present to the Brethren of Saint John’s Lodge No.1, this Heavy Setting Maul.

The handle is one of two that I had made from a section of the maple tree which is still growing at the site of the Masonic Temple, 6 Cathedral Street, St. John’s, NL. A section of that same tree had been trimmed off in 2004. I acquired several sections of those trimmings, and carefully stored them to dry until such time that it would be suitable for their intended purpose. Each aspect of this working tool’s form and function was painstakingly thought out and implemented. The Maul itself is approximately one cubit in length. The head of the Maul is made from local seal fur, in acknowledement our Lodge’s rich history of our traditional “Past Master’s Night” seal flipper dinner. You will notice on the center of the circular ended handle that there is the carved image of the symbolic Third-Degree Square and Compass, signifying unity and the intended timing and function of this working tool. The three rings on the handle symbolize the three great, though emblematic, lights of Freemasonry. The two rings at the top are meant to symbolize the terrestrial earth upon which we live and the celestial heavens up above. When all five rings are reflected upon, they represent the, “Five Points of Fellowship,” upon which every Brother is raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. The Lodge’s name and current registry number is also engraved on the handle so that all will know of its ownership and intended purpose.
Worshipful Master, through you, I entrust to the Lodge’s safe keeping this working tool for the good of Freemasonry in General and Saint John’s Lodge in Particular.”
